Import from your broker (optional)
Add your E*Trade, Schwab or Zerodha exports and the steps below fill themselves. You review everything before it's added.
Which files to download
- Schwab Equity Award Center: History → Transactions → Export (CSV or JSON). Gives vests, ESPP purchases, sales with their lots, dividends and US tax.
- Schwab brokerage account: History → Export. Gives dividends, NRA tax withheld, sells and reinvested shares.
- E*Trade / Morgan Stanley at Work: Stock Plan → My Account → Gains & Losses → Download Expanded (.xlsx). Gives sales with the vest or purchase they came from.
- E*Trade Benefit History: Stock Plan → My Account → Benefit History → Download Expanded. Gives ESPP purchases and RSU releases, so Schedule FA includes the shares you still hold.
- Zerodha Tax P&L: Console → Reports → Tax P&L → choose the financial year → Download (.xlsx). Gives intraday, F&O, Indian shares and mutual funds, with charges and STT.
- Fidelity or another broker? , fill it in, and import it.
Menu names change from time to time. If a file isn't recognised, the review screen lists the columns it found.
Your income
Used to work out your tax rate. Enter salary from Form 16, which already includes RSU/ESPP perquisites. Don't add them again.
Your foreign stocks
One row per company. Schedule FA needs the company's details plus its highest price in calendar year 2025 and its price on 31-Dec-2025.
Where to find this
- Name and address: the company's registered address, from its annual report or SEC filings.
- Peak price: the highest daily closing price between 1-Jan-2025 and 31-Dec-2025 (any price-history site shows it).
- Closing price: the closing price on 31-Dec-2025.
Vests and ESPP purchases
Every lot you still held on 1-Jan-2025 or received since then, plus any older lots you sold in FY 2025-26.
Where to find this
- E*Trade: Stock Plan → My Account → Benefit History. Schwab: Equity Award Center → History. Fidelity: Stock Plans → History.
- FMV per share is the vest-date (RSU) or purchase-date (ESPP) market value. It becomes your cost.
- If your employer sold some shares at vest to cover tax ("sell-to-cover"), enter the full vest here and add that sale in Step 4.
- Optional: put the INR perquisite value from your payslip/Form 16. It overrides FMV × exchange rate as the cost.
Sales
All sales from 1-Jan-2025 to 31-Mar-2026. Jan–Mar 2025 sales matter for Schedule FA, and Apr 2025–Mar 2026 sales are taxed in this return.
Where to find this
- E*Trade: Gains & Losses. Schwab: Realized Gain/Loss. Use the sale price per share, not the net proceeds.
- "Lot sold": choose the exact lot your broker shows, or leave Auto (FIFO) to sell the oldest shares first.
Dividends
All dividends from 1-Jan-2025 to 31-Mar-2026, at the gross amount before US tax. US withholding is usually 25% under the India–US treaty.
Where to find this
- Your broker's account statements or the 1042-S form list the dividend and "Non-resident alien tax" withheld.
- If a dividend was reinvested, still enter it here. Then add the reinvested shares as a purchase in Step 3, with the reinvestment price as the cost.
Indian shares, F&O and intraday
Import your Zerodha Tax P&L above, or type the yearly totals from any Indian broker. Enter losses as negative numbers.
SBI exchange rates (USD → INR)
Enter the SBI telegraphic transfer buying rate (TTBR) for each date below. The list updates as you add entries.
Which rate, and why these dates?
- Sale value and dividends: the TTBR on the last day of the month before the sale or payment (Rule 115). US tax uses the same date (Rule 128).
- Cost: the TTBR on the vest or purchase date (skip it if you entered the INR perquisite value).
- Schedule FA: the TTBR on the peak-price date and on 31-Dec-2025.
- If a date is a holiday or weekend, use the rate of the previous working day. SBI publishes daily forex card rates, and community archives of past SBI TT rates are available online.
